Largest outdoor photo festival in Europe

Do you fancy sustainable cultural enjoyment? The “Festival La Gacilly Baden Photo” is a special outdoor exhibition about dealing with our environment and combines art with the flair of bathing in an extraordinary way. Surprisingly modern in the historic old town, huge and inspiring - these keywords in particular describe the festival with potential for the future!

The setting: City of Baden in a new splendor
Baden not only scores with a beautiful historic center, until October 26, 2020, around 2.000 contemporary photographs by famous photo journalists and photo artists will also give the city an extraordinary face. You can discover new motifs everywhere: between trees, on old buildings and green spaces in parks or other unexpected places. This optical fusion of art and the imperial ambience shows exciting contrasts. For the third year in a row, the profound photographs have been attracting many visitors. In 2019, more than 260.000 people visited the largest outdoor exhibition in Europe.

In focus: people and their relationship to the environment
The aim of the festival is to show the influence our behavior has on nature and the environment. Using examples such as global warming in Siberia or the coal industry in Poland, our relationship with the earth is questioned in exemplary images. This is intended to raise the awareness of the visitors for this important topic.
However, the statements in the photographs are not always self-explanatory and clearly understandable for the viewer if one does not read the short, long accompanying texts. This is a shame, since people only perceive many exhibits superficially in passing and so many messages are lost. Large subject headings above the photos and an app with explanatory audio information would therefore help to provide a clearer understanding.

Development of the festival: emergence and potential for SDGs
“La Gacilly Baden Photo” was created in collaboration with the Yves Rocher Foundation. The well-known cosmetics company, which founded the photo festival in 2004 in the Breton village of La Gacilly, has been integrating the global development goals of the UN (Sustainable Development Goals / SDGs) into its corporate philosophy since 2018. However, the goals are not reflected in the brand communication or in the context of the event. This is a shame, because the festival in particular offers an excellent public platform for the dissemination of the SDGs. A chance for the future!

CONCLUSION
A really interesting, inspiring and recommendable photo festival in the beautiful setting of the city of Baden, which makes you think and is worth a visit until October 26th! For me, the impressive display of the consequences of our consumer society shakes visitors up. The sometimes drastic photographs question how we deal with the environment and thus raise awareness of how much each and every individual can contribute with their personal lifestyle and purchasing behavior. The aim of the festival, to critically examine the relationship between humans and the environment, will definitely be achieved. But the event is also the perfect platform to make the global development goals (SDGs) known to a wider public. Therefore, in my opinion, these should be integrated as the next logical step in the exhibition concept of the great event.
