In recent years the Hungarian government has pushed forward controversial laws that put the judiciary under political pressure and endanger the independence of the courts.
Erzsébet Diós was a criminal court judge for over 40 years and openly criticized the increasing restriction of judicial independence. In 2012, the national judicial authority forced hundreds of independent judges, including Erzsébet, into retirement by arbitrarily lowering the statutory retirement age. The government wanted to fill important posts in the courts with judges loyal to the government.
