The planned desecration of the Holy Cross Church in Keyenberg was stopped by the diocese in Aachen for the time being. The key decision on lignite by Armin Laschet in March should be awaited - it will be decided whether the village should give way to lignite at all.

On Rose Monday we visited the people in Keyenberg with our Jacques Tilly car. Relief and hope for Carnival: Perhaps the demolition of the church can still be prevented.

Background: This spring, the key decision in NRW will be how the boundaries of the opencast mines in the Rheinische Revier will be defined in the future. Despite the coal phase-out, Laschet has so far stuck to the planned relocation of further villages for lignite mining, over 1500 people are to be relocated. RWE intends to mine almost 900 million tons of lignite by 2038. With this amount, the federal government could no longer achieve the goals of the Paris climate agreement for Germany.
