It starts! Climate Justice Now.

Imagine: Elderly women could save us from climate collapse. This is exactly what the climate seniors want with their climate lawsuit with the support of Greenpeace. The Climate Seniors have been fighting for climate justice since 2016. At that time, together with four individual plaintiffs, they went to the federal government and demanded more climate protection to protect their basic rights to life and health.

Imagine: Elderly women could save us from climate collapse. This is exactly what the climate seniors want with their climate lawsuit with the support of Greenpeace.

The Climate Seniors have been fighting for climate justice since 2016. At that time, together with four individual plaintiffs, they went to the federal government and demanded more climate protection to protect their basic rights to life and health. However, they were not heard, and both the Federal Administrative Court and the Federal Supreme Court dismissed their complaints.

That is why the climate seniors took their case to the European Court of Human Rights ECtHR in Strasbourg. The Swiss climate lawsuit is one of the first of its kind at the court and could become a precedent for Europe, if not the whole world. The court is treating the Swiss climate lawsuit as a priority and has delegated it to the jurisdiction of the Grand Chamber. The Grand Chamber consists of 17 judges and is entrusted with cases that raise serious questions about the interpretation or application of the European Convention on Human Rights. Very few of the cases pending at the ECtHR are heard in the Grand Chamber.

What has not been achieved in decades of negotiations and political bickering could change thanks to a decision by the European Court of Human Rights thanks to the ClimateSeniors: that states like Switzerland protect our human rights through more climate protection measures.
