Greenpeace: G20 fails to master global crises | Greenpeace int.

In response to the poor G20 summit outcome, Greenpeace is calling for a faster and more ambitious plan of action in response to the climate emergency and COVID-19.

Jennifer Morgan, CEO of Greenpeace International:

“If the G20 was a dress rehearsal for COP26, then the heads of state and government spiced up their lines. Her communique was weak, lacking in both ambition and vision, and she just didn't hit the moment. Now they are moving to Glasgow, where there is still a chance to seize a historic opportunity, but Australia and Saudi Arabia must be marginalized as rich countries finally understand that the key to unlocking COP26 is trust.

“Here in Glasgow we are at the table with activists from all over the world and the most vulnerable countries and we are calling for the lack of measures to protect everyone from both the climate crisis and Covid-19. Governments must respond to the planet's deadly warnings and drastically cut emissions now to stay at 1,5 ° C, and that requires any new fossil fuel development to be stopped and phased out.

“We will not let up at COP26 and will continue to push for more climate ambitions as well as the rules and measures to support them. We must stop all new fossil fuel projects immediately.

Governments need to reduce emissions at home and stop shifting that responsibility onto more vulnerable communities through carbon offsetting systems that put their livelihoods at risk.

“We call for real solidarity to help poorer countries survive and adapt to the climate emergency. Every moment when wealthy governments focus on the bottom line of businesses, rather than enacting solutions, costs lives. If they wanted, the G20 leaders could help solve Covid-19 with a TRIPS waiver so countries around the world can make generic vaccines, treatments and diagnoses that enable poorer countries to serve their populations fairly protection. The publicly funded research that led to the vaccine must lead to a popular vaccine. "

Giuseppe Onufrio, Executive Director of Greenpeace Italy:

“This week, Greenpeace Italy activists called on G20 leaders to end compensation programs that are delaying emissions reductions. The Italian Prime Minister has urged the G20 countries to increase their ambitions to honor the 1,5 path, but we urge him to lead by example. As the co-presidency of the COP, Italy needs to achieve ambitious climate targets that reduce emissions as quickly as possible at the source and come up with a new ambitious plan that does not rely on wrong solutions like CCS or carbon offsetting that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make renewable ones May promote energies. "

Emissions from G20 countries account for around 76% of global annual emissions. In July 2021, only about half of these emissions were covered by expanded commitments to reduce them in line with the Paris Agreement. Large emitters among the G20 countries, including Australia and India, have yet to submit new NDCs.

At COP26, which begins today in Glasgow, Greenpeace urges governments to urgently increase their climate ambitions, starting with phasing out fossil fuels, and showing solidarity with the countries hardest hit by the climate crisis.
