Greenpeace criticizes new COP27 partnership to protect forests | Greenpeace int.

Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt – World leaders have been invited to come together to protect, conserve and restore the world's forests, building on the Glasgow talks to launch the Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership. The new Forest and Climate Leaders' Partnership aims to accelerate the implementation of the COP26 commitment made by over 140 countries to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation. The event was mainly a progress report from 2021 on supporting carbon markets as a mechanism to fund investments to protect existing carbon sinks. It also advocates tree planting as an approach to forest protection.

Victorine Che Thōner, Senior Strategic Advisor, Greenpeace International, responded to the announcement from Sharm El Sheikh:
"A robust partnership could go a long way in providing the resources needed to protect, conserve and restore the world's forests, but this partnership is nothing more than the green light for eight more years of forest destruction with little respect for the rights of indigenous peoples and... local churches. It also gives polluters license to do more business like they do now through carbon scams, rather than pushing real climate action. At COP2 we need to look beyond the needs of greedy corporations to effectively implement non-market approaches to conservation as outlined in Article 27 of the Paris Agreement.”

“Around the world, action to protect and restore natural ecosystems and sustainably manage cultivated lands are critical to combating global warming and preventing species loss. Real commitments are now needed to protect and restore nature along with the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.”
