Greenhouse gas balance 2019: targets missed

"Greenhouse gas emissions in Austria increased by 2018% from 2019 to 1,5 and are 79,8 million tons of CO2 equivalent," according to the greenhouse gas balance of the Federal Environment Agency for 2019. That is around 1,2 million tons more emissions than in the comparable period. A higher steel production (after a maintenance shutdown of a blast furnace in 2018) and higher electricity production in natural gas power plants are to blame.

According to the current greenhouse gas balance, the national target for 2019 was therefore not achieved. The actual emissions of the relevant sectors are around 50,2 million tons, which is around 1,9 million tons above the target value of 2019 million tons valid for 48,3.

“In terms of economic growth (2019% real) and population growth (1,6%), 0,4 was an average year. After very mild weather in 2018, the heating degree days increased slightly in 2019 (+ 1,4%) and are slightly below the long-term trend. For 2020, the experts at the Federal Environment Agency are assuming a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of around minus 9% due to the measures taken to combat the corona pandemic, ”reads the statement from the Federal Environment Agency. This means that, despite being exceeded in 2019, the national targets can "presumably be met" over the entire period (2013 - 2020) according to the Federal Environment Agency. Greenpeace speaks of a "catastrophic greenhouse gas balance 2019".
