Gas conference: After the climate strike, the movement announces the next protests BlockGas

European alliance BlockGas calls for mass actions at the end of March in Vienna

During the recent global climate strike, the climate movement around Fridays for Future sent a strong signal against Austria's "climate blockers". Under the motto "Stop climate blockers - everyone on the streets!" The demonstration moves from Maria-Theresien-Platz past the party headquarters of the ÖVP and the Greens to Ballhausplatz.

In addition to the climate blockers ÖVP, WKO and IV, the protest of the demonstrators is also directed against the fossil gas lobby. A broad alliance of climate justice as well as feminist and anti-capitalist groups from Vienna and all over Europe calls from 25.-29. March under the motto BlockGas to actions against the European Gas Conference. “The gas lobby wants to assert its fossil, destructive interests here in Vienna behind closed doors once again. We will prevent that! Because fossil energy production means the exploitation of countries of the Global South and the dependence on autocratic regimes. Let's make sure that this European gas conference will be the last!” says Verena Gradinger, spokeswoman for BlockGas.

“While more and more people can no longer afford heating, gas conference guests are shelling out upwards of 3000 euros for a ticket. These include all major oil and gas companies such as OMV, BP, Total, Shell and RWE. They all made record profits last year, with skyrocketing prices pushing many people into fuel poverty. They all violate human rights for their profit. And they all come to Vienna in March and want to build NEW fossil infrastructure? We will crash your champagne party together with people from all over Europe!” says Anselm Schindler, spokesman for BlockGas.

"When climate blockers destroy our livelihoods, the climate movement responds with lawsuits, strikes and blockades," explains Daniel Shams of Fridays for Future. “12 courageous children and young people are suing Michaela Krömer before the Constitutional Court. Thousands of motivated people were with us on the streets today. And in March, too, we will stand in the way of the climate blockers at the gas conference. And one goal unites us all: our right to a future worth living.”
