Awarded for construction reuse and circular economy

BauKarussell was named for its innovative and resource-efficient dismantling concepts was awarded the Phoenix Special Prize for "Waste Prevention". It is the first large-scale, social dismantling project in Austria and contributes to the development of a circular economy.

The project consortium, on behalf of the builder, removes furniture, components, building materials and other materials that can be re-used in other buildings or for recycling, thereby reducing the costs of disposal and the negative environmental impact. At the same time, jobs will be created for disadvantaged people in the labor market. Consistently conceived circular economy is more than just optimized recycling, explains Matthias Neitsch, managing director of the reuse network RepaNet and BauKarussell partner. In the construction sector, the recycling economy includes the re-use of entire components as well as re-use-oriented new building planning. The ecological, economic and social added value are many times greater than in recycling.

BauKarussell is supported by the BMDW, VKS GmbH and the City of Vienna and received the Viennese environmental award 2018. The project was designed by Romm / Mischek ZT, pulswerk gmbh, RepaNet, WUK education and counseling as well as the socio-economic enterprises Caritas SÖB(Vienna) and dismantling and recycling center DRZ Wiener Volkshochschulen GmbH, acting on behalf of and with funds from AMS Wien.

The Pönix Waste Management Prize is awarded annually by the Austrian Water and Waste Management Association and the Federal Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism within the framework of the Austrian Waste Management Conference forgive. The Special Award for Waste Prevention is endowed with 2.000 Euro and is supported by ARA AG.
