Food rescue made easy: Vorarlberg project shows how

The initiative started at the end of 2018 "Open refrigerator" in Vorarlberg. Under the motto “bring and take” food should be saved from being thrown away and made accessible to everyone via the open refrigerator. Food that is not needed can simply be put in the refrigerator. There are now seven such refrigerators in Vorarlberg.

According to the initiators, 500 to 600 kg of food could already be saved every week. The open refrigerator cooperates with various bakeries and shops. In addition, the initiative organizes events such as a leftover cooking course and various campaigns on the topics of saving and wasting food.

If you want to save excess food in the region, you need to know the following points:

  • The food must be fresh and palatable.
  • They may have expired but are still suitable for consumption.
  • Harvest surpluses are welcome.
  • Even food that has been freshly bottled, well sealed and labeled with its content and date of manufacture can be put in the open refrigerator.

Not allowed in the refrigerator:

  • Nothing raw like meat and fish
  • No opened packs
  • No food that is obviously already spoiled or that already looks or smells “mangy”.
