Greenpeace Germany turns 40! If you want to know how a small citizens' initiative turned into a large environmental movement, then listen to our podcast series “Now even more”.
The nuclear phase-out by 2022 is a done deal in Germany, not least due to years of protests. In the first Greenpeace campaign in 1971, a handful of environmentalists set sail off the coast of Alaska to prevent American nuclear weapons tests. Numerous international and national actions against nuclear power and nuclear armament followed. The nuclear phase-out in Germany is a partial success of these actions and protests. And yet the danger is not over. What to do with the highly radioactive waste? Most recently, a Castor transport with the dangerous cargo rolled through Germany at the end of 2020.
Research into nuclear weapons and nuclear armament are also still an existential threat to humanity. In this episode, Heinz Smital and Christoph von Lieven reveal the fairy tale of peaceful nuclear power, make it clear why it is so dangerous and does not offer an alternative solution in the fight against the climate crisis.
