Fair trade organic coffee beans are test winners

In the current coffee test by the Association for Consumer Information (VKI), 22 products made from whole coffee beans were tested with regard to harmful substances, labeling and sensory properties. The result is impressive: eleven test subjects were rated 'very good', six were rated 'good'. The remaining five products received an 'average' rating.

In the first three places, coffee beans in organic quality with a Fairtrade seal from the middle price segment landed. "Our test shows that fair trade organic coffee meets high quality standards and does not have to be expensive," say VKI project managers Nina Eichberger and Teresa Bauer.

Dallmayr / Prodomo, EZA / Espresso Organico and Eduscho / Gala No. 1 achieved an “average” rating because of a comparatively higher acrylamide content. This substance can damage the genetic makeup and cause cancer. According to the VKI, the products from Dallmayr, Eduscho and EZA exhaust the EU guideline value for acrylamide by more than half.

“The 'Caffé in grani' by Bellarom and 'Regio Gold' also scored only 'average'. In the first, the reviewers found a stone, the second lost valuable points due to inadequate product labeling ”, it says in the broadcast.
