Science tells us that we need to protect at least 2030% of our oceans by 30 to avoid the worst effects of climate change and protect wildlife. Protected areas are the best tool we have to protect biodiversity, rebuild depleted populations, and provide our oceans a fighting chance to survive the impacts of industrial fisheries, plastic pollution, and climate change. The images, data and stories from our work in Antarctica will fuel efforts to build support for protected areas.
The 5th United Nations Intergovernmental Conference (IGC5) in August is our best opportunity to make ocean history with the adoption of a strong Global Oceans Treaty. And the United States must take the lead to make this a reality. We need Secretary of State Blinken to get on board. It is imperative that our top official represent the United States at the 5th IGC to show the UN that the US is serious about passing a global ocean treaty that protects at least 2030% of the high seas by 30.
