Ingo Bajerke comes from Keyenberg. If it were up to Armin Laschet and the coal group RWE, this place disappears for the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine. For Ingo Bajerke, home is more than an address. The Holy Cross Church in Keyenberg has a special history for him. No soulless new building can replace it.

Despite the decision to phase out coal, Laschet plans to expand lignite mining in North Rhine-Westphalia. Over 1500 people would lose their homes and villages and churches would be demolished. The key decision on the future mining limits of the opencast mines is expected in April. In the Rhineland, more than 45.000 people have already been resettled for open-cast lignite mining and over 100 villages and hamlets, including centuries-old churches and cultural monuments, have been destroyed.

The CDU chief's lignite course has also met with public criticism in the church. In an appeal published in February by almost 50 organizations, Catholic and Protestant church associations call for the destruction of homeland and villages to be stopped and for the endangered towns to be preserved with the upcoming key decision - also for climate protection.

Current reports also show that there is no reason for the energy supply in Germany to sacrifice villages for open-cast lignite mines. So it's time for a quick exit from coal.
