Demand for organic food in Austria at a record high

In 2020, sales of organic food reached a new record high. "Compared to Previous year organic sales across all sales channels increased by 316 million euros or 15 percent. It currently stands at 2.374 million euros. This is shown by the results of the AMA's annual market survey, ”reports BIO AUSTRIA. The organic association sees one of the reasons for this increase in the increasing social awareness of issues such as the climate crisis and biodiversity.

From 2019 to 2020, however, the increase in the area of organic farms was only 0,9 percent, which corresponds to an increase of 235 farms. In comparison, around 2018 farms switched to organic in 2019 to 800 - an increase of 3,3 percent. The low rate since 2019 can be explained at BIO AUSTRIA with the expiry of public programs to support companies in switching to organic.

According to the AMA, a total of 24.480 farms are currently operating organically in Austria, which is 22,7 percent of all farms.
