On March 25th and 26th, BauKarussell, SOZIALBAU AG and WBV-GPA invited trade visitors and interested parties to experience the potential of building demolition and the artistic examination of demolition buildings in the former Sophienspital.
As the first provider of social urban mining, BauKarussell has already gained a great deal of experience in recycling-oriented demolition. Recently, the consortium, in which RepaNet is also involved, has even been named as an example for the reuse of components in ÖNORM 3151, which regulates the dismantling of buildings (more on this).
A kind of take-away of the previous findings in social urban mining was recently presented to the public: At the end of March, the gates of the former Vienna Sophienspital were opened to visitors of the first OPEN MINE DAY. A new city district with a total of 2024 subsidized apartments, including 180 council apartments, as well as a wide range of educational, work and cultural facilities will be created on the site by the end of 21. BauKarussell implemented social urban mining on site on behalf of SOZIALBAU AG and WBV-GPA (more on this). In the Europa Pavilion, an exhibition was used to highlight the potential for added value in the context of building demolition. Social urban mining was placed in a socio-cultural context and entered into a dialogue with art in dismantling.
Reverse sampling, street art and MINING art
The visitors of the OPEN MINE DAY in the Sophienspital were able to get an impression of the added value that can be created through social urban mining. The exhibition in the Europa Pavilion addressed a backwards sampling and allowed visitors to experience the building in a state shortly before demolition. What was also special about the OPEN MINE DAY was the intertwining with artistic contributions: in the weeks before the event, numerous walls of the building were artistically designed by the street artists moiz, Jakob der Bruder, Seco and Skirl. The room for the press conference on March 25, moderated by Irene Schanda (public relations RepaNet/BauKarussell), also had a special atmosphere.
The panel consisted of Kathrin Gaal, Deputy Mayor and City Councilor for Housing, Housing, Urban Renewal and Women; Mag. Markus Reiter, district manager new building; Mag. Winfried Göschl, deputy manager of the labor market service in Vienna; master builder Hannes Stangl, Technical Director SOZIALBAU AG; and Mag. Thomas Rihl, Managing Director of Job-TransFair. Circular economy on site and the "Social Urban Miner" training developed by BauKarussell and Der KÜMMEREI were discussed, which in future will offer transit workers a low-threshold qualification opportunity in recycling-oriented demolition. (more on this).
Another substantial artistic contribution to the OPEN MINE DAY came from the MINING collective, consisting of the artists Ursula Gaisbauer and Friedrich Engl, who created the extract from the two projects MINING: Untertage (São Paulo, 2018) and MINING: Filmhaus (Vienna, 2020). exhibited in the form of photos and video works.
