Ten Greenpeace activists are protesting today in front of Cologne Cathedral against the coal-mining plans of North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister and CDU leader Armin Laschet. On the car of the well-known Rhenish wagon builder Jacques Tilly, Laschet can be seen with a carnival hat as the driver of a bucket wheel excavator that is tearing down a church. We spoke to the artist Jacques Tilly beforehand: About the importance of satire, the responsibility of politics and carnival in times of Corona.

Background: This spring a key decision is pending in North Rhine-Westphalia as to how the boundaries of the opencast mines in the Rheinische Revier will be defined in the future. Despite the coal phase-out, Laschet has so far stuck to the planned relocation of further villages for lignite mining, over 1500 people are to be relocated. RWE intends to mine almost 900 million tons of lignite by 2038. With this amount, the federal government could no longer achieve the goals of the Paris climate agreement for Germany.
