All over Austria people took to the streets last weekend for an ecologically and socially just turnaround in mobility and against the construction of large-scale fossil fuel projects.
In Linz, for example, there are protests against the construction of a new motorway: “On the motorway against new motorways”, under this motto around 100 cyclists used the Linz A7 city motorway, which was free of cars this morning because of the marathon, for a creative demonstration. "A great campaign that was carried by optimism: We will not give up until the two completely outdated motorways that are to be built in Linz in this decade are history," said the activists of the Verkehrswende initiative now! .
In Wiener Neustadt, 22 tractors were in the city center at the weekend: According to the current Lower Austrian state government, there were protests against the construction of a bypass road that should lead over valuable farmland and through the middle of the Fischa-Au. Helmut Buzzi from the "Reason instead of Eastern Bypass" initiative in Wiener Neustadt: "Before the upcoming state elections in Lower Austria, we are protesting together with the farmers from Lichtenwörth against a completely outdated road project that was planned in the last millennium. We want to save the valuable Lichtenwörther fields and the Fischa-Au in the east of Wiener Neustadt.”
These are just two examples of struggles that are taking place all over Austria over the construction of large-scale fossil projects that cost billions in tax money and would stand in the way of climate-friendly and affordable mobility. The current energy crisis shows once again that politicians must finally stop making decisions that tie people to the expensive and outdated car system.
“Therefore, people all over Austria show solidarity and fight together for ecological and socially just mobility. It doesn't matter whether it's a mega tunnel in Vorarlberg or the leveling of the Lichtenwörther fields - if these projects are taken seriously, we will stand in the way together," concludes Anna Kontriner, spokeswoman for LobauBleibt.
