Australian universities have failed to protect the academic freedom of Chinese students and academics who criticize the Chinese Communist Party. Beijing-friendly supporters and the Chinese government have also harassed and intimidated those expressing support for democracy movements.

Students by and large are aware that the Chinese government is being monitored, which scares them. Many change their behavior and self-censorship to avoid threats and harassment from classmates and to be “reported” to the authorities at home.
