But night trains again? Pro and con

I remember it exactly when I went with the family as a child on the night train for the first time. Back then, it went from Munich to the Baltic Sea - a very nice route that my parents didn't want to travel by car or plane in the summer. I remember how excited I was when we unfolded the beds in the wagon, made the bed, and then pulled the curtains to sleep. Gradually, the car returned to calm, while the train gently rocked you to sleep with one or two small jerks. The next morning I woke up with the smell of coffee, orange juice and bread rolls in my nose and when I looked out of the window I saw the beautiful landscape passing by - we had arrived at the Baltic Sea!

In 2016, Deutsche Bahn withdrew from the night train business for economic reasons. The night trains of the Deutsche Bahn bought the ÖBB and turned them into "Night Jets“- the request is very high. Thirteen new Nightjet trains worth 2022 million euros will be made available as early as the beginning of 200, and they will be elegant, modern and comfortable. Since cheaper tickets in Germany led to significantly more passengers, the DB reports that there is a shortage of train drivers - around 1000 train drivers are missing. If Deutsche Bahn really wants to keep up with the successes of ÖBB, a lot has to be done in a short time. As a first step, Germany would have to let night trains run again.

Night trains pros and cons

Pro:

  • Arrive at your destination rested
  • Environmentally friendly option (according to ÖBB, Deutsche Bahn produces 30 times less CO2 than an airplane)
  • Economical - one night in the hotel and arrival from the airport are eliminated
  • Awareness through a changed sense of time and a sense of distance
  • Freedom of movement & comfort

against:

  • Mostly night trains cannot compete with cheap offers from the airline airlines.
  • Extended travel time
  • Not enough privacy when sleeping (but this doesn't exist on the plane either)
  • Connections have not yet been fully developed

Many people fear that climate protection is only accompanied by a waiver - this need not be the case. For example, night trains do not use fast flights, but you do get a relaxed travel program on the way to your destination.
