Balance - Editorial by Helmut Melzer

One percent of the world's population will own more than half of the world's wealth in 2016. Personally, I don't envy them. What is annoying, however, is that this illustrious society - legitimized by politics - is responsible, among other things, for the ongoing economic crisis. The whole world has to pay the bill.

Historically this has a tradition: Wealth and power have always been based on the suffering of the poorest and the exploitation of the planet - for the prosperity of a global minority and the profit of a few. Not much has changed in this regard. The current wave of refugees is only a symptom of a sick world politics of economic interests.

But far-reaching changes have been announced: despite all the negative side effects, thanks to globalization and worldwide networking, a civil society has emerged that is about to become the decisive political force. A force that is already mobilizing millions of people to change the world positively.

The paradox of it: Only the prosperity achieved through exploitation brought that unprecedented level of education, which now allows the counter-movement.

We are increasingly assuming responsibility for the planet and its inhabitants, as this issue of Option clearly shows. - And we are ringing in an epoch of turning point that may one day be regarded as the most important period in human history. An epoch that also enables human survival.
