(Washington, DC) - The lives and health of people pregnant in Argentina are at risk as long as access to abortion and post-abortion care remains severely restricted. Congress should legalize abortion to protect their fundamental rights, given the insurmountable obstacles they face in trying to gain access to abortion under the limited exemptions allowed by law.

The 77-page report, titled "A Legal Abortion Case: The Human Cost of Obstacles to Sexual and Reproductive Rights in Argentina," outlines the consequences of the Senate's rejection of a 2018 law that completely eliminates abortion in the first 14 weeks would have decriminalized pregnancy. Human Rights Watch documented cases of women and girls who have since encountered a number of barriers to access to legal abortion and aftercare. Barriers include arbitrarily imposed pregnancy limits, lack of access to and availability of abortion methods, fear of prosecution, stigma and ill-treatment by health professionals.
