Amnesty International's new report on the global use of the death penalty documents at least 2022 executions in 883 countries in 20 - the highest number of judicial executions since 2017. The increase is mainly due to executions in the Middle East and North Africa region. The organization has recorded at least 576 executions in Iran alone. In Saudi Arabia, 81 people were executed in just one day. Six countries have abolished the death penalty in whole or in part in the past year.

90 percent of the executions recorded worldwide were carried out by just three countries in the Middle East and North Africa region. The number of recorded executions in Iran rose from 314 in 2021 to 576 in 2022. In Saudi Arabia, the number tripled from 65 in 2021 to 196 in 2022. In Egypt, 24 people were executed.
