At the start of the coal commission Greenpeace activists turned the roundabout around the Berlin Victory Column into a huge sun.
Despite the friendly symbolism, the background is very serious: Germany has overslept its exit from coal power and is now chasing its climate targets. The coal commission is now to clarify how Germany can save so much carbon dioxide by the year 2020 that it is back on track and remains within the guidelines of the Paris Climate Agreement. Originally planned by the federal government was a reduction in CO2 emissions of 40 percent compared to 1990 - without far-reaching measures, it is more likely to amount to 32 percent.
