Israel's sweeping restrictions on leaving the Gaza Strip deprive its more than two million residents of opportunities to improve their lives, Human Rights Watch said today on the fifteenth anniversary of the 2007 Gaza Strip closure. The closure has devastated Gaza's economy, fragmenting the Palestinian people contributed to and is part of the Israeli authorities' crimes against humanity of apartheid and the persecution of millions of Palestinians.
Israel's closure policy prevents most Gaza residents from going to the West Bank, prevents professionals, artists, athletes, students and others from taking advantage of opportunities within Palestine and traveling abroad via Israel, restricting their rights to work and education. Egypt's restrictive policies on the Rafah-Gaza border, including unnecessary delays and mistreatment of travelers, have compounded the closure's violations of human rights.
