Car taxes from October depend on CO2 emissions

At the beginning of October, the new calculation method for engine-related insurance tax (mVst) will take effect in Austria. "From October 1, 2020, the CO2 emissions as stated in the vehicle papers will also be used for the calculation of motorcycles and cars," says ÖAMTC transport expert Nikola Junick.

Reinhold Baudisch, managing director of durchblicker explains in a press release: “It turns out that an individual calculation makes sense for each model, since engine performance and CO2 values have to be taken into account in combination. However, with emissions of up to 140 grams of CO2 per kilometer, the tax is lower in any case according to the new calculation method. "

Well meant, but ...

It is absurd that on numerous models the tax will be far more than a hundred euros per year cheaper than according to the old calculation method - which will probably make individual car traffic more attractive again. For the Skoda Octavia, according to Statistics Austria the most registered car in 2020, durchblicker made an example calculation. Baudisch: "The durchblicker calculation brings a clear result here: With the Octavia, regardless of the engine, it pays off for every model variant to only register the car from October 1, 2020 under the new calculation method of engine-related insurance tax." According to the calculations by durchblicker, savings in the model with an output of 85 kW are € 237,84 cheaper per year. If you add this up over the average service life of around a decade, the savings are considerable. With the Octavia with 180 kW, the tax savings drops to 52,56 euros per year, according to the comparison portal.

However, with the reform of the mVSt (at least for first-time registrations) the so-called short-term surcharges will be abolished. Junick explains: “In the case of monthly, quarterly or half-yearly payment of the VAT together with the insurance company, up to ten percent was added to the total amount compared to the annual payment method. From October this will no longer be the case for first-time registrations. In the future, this innovation will primarily benefit those for whom, due to their financial situation, it is easier to pay several small amounts. "
