Böller ban in Munich offers new options

The city council of Munich has decided to ban fireworks in the city center (within the middle ring). There will be no fireworks at all between Marienplatz and Stachus.

The reason for this is the irresponsible handling of firecrackers, firecrackers and firecrackers, which were thrown in crowds. In addition, the levels of fine dust pollution and the amount of waste produced have been very high in recent years. Nature often suffers from the pleasure of humans - so the noise also contributes to the fact that birds are frightened by the noise and the lights as a panic reaction. They often fly much higher in the sky than they usually do and reach heights of up to 1000 meters instead of the usual 100 meters. The problem is that important energy reserves of the birds, which are stored for the winter, are suddenly used up. Since many birds fly in sight, the colorful fireworks cause a loss of orientation. Leaving the nest can cause eggs or chicks to die. With the current environmental crisis, of course, this stimulates thinking.

However, the complete absence of fireworks on New Year's Eve should not be either, as it is fun for many, tradition and can be a symbol for a new start. For this reason, rockets have not been completely banned. Fireworks are also not prohibited outside the cities and villages. Nevertheless, more consideration should be given to nature in the future - for example, the ornithologist Norbert Schäffer advises people in a Tagesspiegel article: "At least a few hundred meters distance to protected areas or larger water areas where a particularly large number of birds rest".

Those who are in the city can also find alternatives. For example, in each city there is a big fireworks display instead of many small ones. Another modern alternative is light and laser shows with music. There are already a few options in Munich, for example in Erding. In China, there is even drone light art that has been programmed with a choreography - an idea that could perhaps also be brought to Germany. Fire shows, torches, lanterns or sparklers are also nice alternatives. The ban may initially be annoying to many, but it does offer new options for a Happy New Year and a change in awareness.
