(Berlin, September 15, 2020) - In the days following the presidential elections on August 9, 2020, Belarusian security forces arbitrarily arrested thousands of people and systematically exposed hundreds to torture and other ill-treatment, Human Rights Watch said today.

Victims described beatings, prolonged exposure to stress, electric shocks and, in at least one case, rape and said they saw other inmates suffer the same or worse abuse. They had serious injuries including broken bones, cracked teeth, skin wounds, electrical burns, and minor traumatic brain injuries. Some had kidney damage. Six of the respondents were hospitalized for one to five days. The police held detainees for several days, often without contact with the outside world, in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.
