Austrians are not aware that their money has an impact on the climate

80 percent of Austrians state that active climate and environmental protection is important to them. However, there is still a great deal of ignorance about which measures are really effective in this regard. This was the result of a representative survey by the Allianz Group in Austria with 1.500 respondents on the influence of money and financial flows on climate change.

Underrated leverage: where does the money go?

Measures such as avoiding plastic are considered to be particularly effective for protecting the climate by around 83 percent of those surveyed. Avoiding air travel is considered by more than half and avoiding meat a quarter of those surveyed as influential. Compared to the actual CO2 Savings, however, there is a clear discrepancy between the assumptions in the population and reality. How to reduce your CO2 Output by dispensing with plastic bags by only 2 kilos per year. In comparison, one kilo of domestic beef produces an average of 18 kilograms of CO2 and a flight from Vienna to Barcelona 267 kilograms.

At the bottom of the ranking is climate and environmentally friendly money from banks or insurance companies: only 6 percent of Austrians consider this measure to be effective. However, it is underestimated that the financial sector in particular has strong opportunities to make a difference. Every euro that Austrians put into a bank account or pay as a premium to an insurance company will continue to be invested in the financial market. In Austria alone, financial assets total 715 billion euros - almost twice as much as Austria's gross domestic product. But just under 13 percent of investments are currently based on sustainable criteria.

  1. There is no self-interest: flying is not faster and cheaper for short distances if you add all the components together. Car, looking for a parking space at the airport, the airport is usually outside - looking for means of transport - but who takes the time to calculate everything. So as before: flying.
