Austria pays a high price for cheap fuel

A recent one confirms that fossil fuels are comparatively cheap in this country Analysis of the VCÖ. According to this, a liter of Eurosuper costs more in twenty EU countries than in Austria. “In the Netherlands a liter of Eurosuper costs 50 cents more than in Austria, in Italy 33 cents, in Germany 22 cents and the EU average around 20 cents. Eurosuper is only cheaper in countries with lower income levels such as Romania, Bulgaria, Poland or Hungary. Diesel is also cheaper in Austria than the EU average, ”says the VCÖ press release.

According to a study by the state of Tyrol, the cost savings when refueling in Austria compared to other EU countries bring numerous fuel tourists. Studies have shown that several hundred thousand trucks take a detour via Austria every year in order to save costs and fill their tanks with diesel. “In addition to the environment, the victims of this detour transit are the neighbors and drivers on the transit routes,” says VCÖ expert Michael Schwendinger. The breakthrough in e-mobility is also being hindered by cheap fuel prices. A recently published study by Greenpeace also shows that the ten percent of households with the highest income use seven times as much fuel as the ten percent with the lowest incomes. This means that the already wealthy consumers benefit from the low price.

“In view of the worsening climate crisis and rising unemployment, the eco-social tax reform should be quickly brought forward. What harms our society, namely CO2 emissions, has to be priced significantly higher, while what we want, namely jobs and climate-friendly behavior, has to be taxed at a lower rate, ”demands Schwendinger.
