48 hours of silence and cold: climate strike in Vienna

Some young people mumbled into blankets, sleeping bags and ski suits on January 06.01th at the Graben in Vienna when it was below zero. Why? They are striking for the climate. It's neither Friday, nor is there a skip at noon, and more than that - they protest in silence. In front of them are pictures of the current catastrophic fires in Australia and painted signs with statements such as: "I am silent because Australia is on fire" (translated: "I am silent because Australia is burning") or "48 hours without words".

The sky in Australia and in surrounding countries is soaked in a juicy orange - the reasons for this are scary, however, because the disastrous Australian forest fire affects the whole world. Temperatures are rising to 46 degrees, according to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, over 3000 emergency services are being mobilized, people are being evacuated from their homes and, according to some estimates, half a billion animals have already been burned.

Although millions of people have been protesting around the world for months, the subject is still underestimated and even laughed at. Many people are now resorting to harder means - from Australian models who “swap” donations for sending nude pictures, or brave young people who sit out all night in the freezing cold to finally be heard through their silence.
