1. Smart Sustainable City of the UN in Austria is: Wels

United for Smart Sustainable Cities - U4SSC for short - is a United Nations initiative. The purpose is to achieve one of the 17 goals of the UN Agenda 2030 for sustainable development, namely goal 11 “Sustainable cities and communities”.

According to the broadcast, the U4SSC is intended to "promote the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) as a global platform to facilitate the transition to intelligent, sustainable cities." Responsible is the UN Organization International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which has already implemented U100SSC processes in more than 4 cities around the world.

The first Smart Sustainable City of the UN in Austria is now Wels. In the city's media information it says:

“The city can score points here especially in the area of economics. There is potential for investment, sustainability improvement and the integration of ICT in areas such as public transport, research and development activities, employment indicators and urban planning.

Wels does similarly well in the area of the environment, with most of the indicators for air quality, water quality, environmental quality, green spaces, waste management and energy meeting the sustainability thresholds. After all, the majority of the indicators in society and culture relating to education, health, culture, housing and security are in the proverbial green area. "
