Jaguars are the third largest cats in the world, after lions and tigers. They are even the largest in their distribution area in Latin America. At first glance, they look confusingly similar to their closely related leopards, but they have a stockier physique and a larger head. In addition, in contrast to the fur markings of the leopards, there are individual spots in the middle of the rosettes in the pattern.
For several decades, jaguars have suffered primarily from the loss of their habitat. Latin America has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world. One of the main reasons for this is industrial agriculture with the cultivation of soya and oil palms and large-scale cattle breeding. In the last 100 years or so, about half of the jaguar's former range has been lost. Today almost 90 percent of the total population lives in the Amazon basin.
